Family Help Darlington CIO was formed and registered as a charity on 13 February 2013 (registered charity number 1150798)
and took over all work from Family Help from 31st March 2013 (registered charity number 506051).
Family Help, the Darlington women's refuge, was founded in 1976 in order to provide safe, temporary accommodation for women and women with children fleeing domestic abuse from all over the UK.
We also have a domestic abuse helpline that receives 400+ calls a year, and is available to anyone affected directly or indiectly by domestic abuse.
Family Help has operated the only specialist refuge in Darlington for 40 years, including the last 10 years under contract with Darlington Borough Council.
We have a wealth of knowledge, skills and experience in providing support to people in relation to domestic abuse. We have developed innovative, flexible and holistic support services for the victims of domestic abuse.
Family Help have found that the only way to provide an excellent service is to thoroughly understand what matters to the clients, and establish and use measures that help to continuously work towards that end.
Family Help offer training to both voluntary and statutory agencies on domestic violence awareness raising. Subjects on offer include 'What is domestic violence?'; 'Domestic Violence and Health'; 'Domestic Violence and its effects on children'; 'What children want'; 'Response to children and young people'; Domestic Violence and the law'; 'Good practice'; 'Safety Planning'; 'Why people abuse'; 'Indicators of Domestic Abuse' etc. Training can be tailored to suit the requirements of individual organisations.
Family Help also give talks to local groups on the work of the refuge, and raise awareness via leafleting and stalls at local events.
'The Freedom Program' is well established and is run several times per week. Many of our women prefer to do it on an individual basis and this is accommodated to suit.
Other programs within the refuge include an introduction to basic computer skills, including how to access the web, set up e-mail, use search engines plus other skills as required.
